Colors

We all are fascinated by colors! Aren't we?! Every day we see so many colors from colorful birds to dull grey iron! Have you ever wondered that how these colors are formed? Many people have this very common misconception that colors are from within the object it is an object's inherent property. But in reality, color is not an inherent property of matter.

In simple words, color is not an inside property of matter. It depends on what light it absorbs and what it reflects. Ok! I guess you must be still thinking over what I meant! Ok, so let's make it simple, imagine you have some red marbles with you and you shine white light on it then obviously you will observe it red, but what makes it appear red? Well, white light is composed of three colors: red, blue, and green. Usually, they mix together and appear as white light, but when it falls on an object the object absorbs some color of light and reflects some color of light.

For example, when you shine white light on the red marbles, the marbles absorb all the other colors and reflect only red light, and this red light is received by our eye and it appears red to us. Phew! So much science behind something that happens in a fraction of a second! Now see what happens when you put those red marbles inside a vase that is blue and transparent, you will see they appear black. Now I guess some of you might have figured it out! What happens, the red light reflected from the marbles first passes through the blue vase which absorbs all other colors of light and reflects only blue light, in this case, it absorbs the red light and reflects no other light because other than red light no other light is there, so does it mean that it would become invisible?!! No! It would appear black because lack of light means black. So! So! Discussed a lot of science we have, haven't we?!

I expect now you have a very clear understanding of how colors are formed. Don't worry if you are asked how colors other than red, blue, green are formed, color variations are due to different colors and different amounts of those colors reflected.
